Sociologist (Radcliffe College, A.M., 1941, Ph.D., 1943), Cussler joined the University of Maryland as an instructor in 1947, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1962, and filed a sex discrimination suit against the University in 1972 on the grounds of inequitable treatment in salary, promotion, teaching assignments, and support for outside research.
